Tiger Woods, the Greatest Ever? ?NOT!?

Tiger is great but still a long way from claiming the title of "Greatest That Ever Played The Game". Although I do believe he is more then on his way to claiming that illustrious title, God willing. But until then, Slammin' Sammy Snead is my pick. That's right, not even Nicklaus.

If you look at the11 win gap between Jack's70 total victories and Sam's 81 and then figure Sam's total of165 victories he claims, no one even comes close. Sorry Jack. Now figure in the shape of the courses today, the equipment and the level of competition and there is no doubt in my mind that Sammy is the man. Keep in mind, Sam played against, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan -- all born the same year - they were considered the era's Big Three. Hogan amassed 63 total wins and Nelson won 52, putting both of them in the top 5 of the all time winners list. Does anyone really thing that Tiger's best competition today, is going to end up in that illustrious group?

Read more http://golfclubinformation.blogspot.com|||Oh well he will go down as the Greatest Golfer of all time as long as he keeps on doing what he is doing , He is a great talent and no he is not perfect , Oh Well deal with it people , I guess you are all perfect HUH !|||his competition is no where close.|||The level of competition is no where near what it was back then, Tiger doesnt have many people to compete with these days, Phil Mickelson hasnt been doin to good, Singh was near the bottom of the leaderboard last tournament. i mean theyre just making it really easy for him to pull away as the number one player in the world. the equipment is also making the game alot easier than it use to be, alot more effort was needed back in those times when golf clubs were made out of real would, and now look at them, the change from those clubs to these is probably a good 30 yds. but i still think tiger is going to be ONE of the best to ever play the game.|||Ten years ago Tiger definitely had a physical advantage over the rest of a crowded field because of his ability to hit the ball longer than most. Today that advantage has all but disappeared because of advances in equipment. The one advantage Tiger still has over his competition is his mental toughness, instilled into him by his dad. The is no doubt that Sam Snead was a great one, but then everyone used the same equipment and tournament directors were not designing courses to defeat Sam like in the most recent Masters where 40 foot trees were purposely planted next to the fairway to stymie any miscues by Tiger.|||No disrespect but you really don't understand golf. Tiger is so much better it is not even close. Snead was a great player but he is significantly behind Jones, Hogan and Nicklaus. Tiger is a great ball striker, has amongst the best short games ever, is more creative and effective than just about anybody who ever played the game. Snead's claim to fame is his longevity, but at no point in his career was he close to what tiger has accomplished in the last 10 years.

Had Bobby Jones turned pro and not retired at 28 years of age, who knows but he too is a fair way behind Tiger at the same stage of his career. The game has changed, the equipment is better but the competition is so much tougher it is hard to imagine any of the old timers being effective in today's field.|||i think he is the greatest golfer, because he is so determined and focused and he is always in his own mindset when he is playing golf, he may not win every tournoment but he is great!|||It's a different game than it was during Snead, Nicklaus, Hogan or Jones time. Early on they played for the love of the game. Then during Jack and Arnie they played to make a living. Now the top players don't need the money. Most can live quite well off of endorsements. And the money they do earn from golf is quite substantial. They can now pick and choose which tournaments they play. They can look for the ones that fit their games. IF they get tired, they take a month or so off. When they get the urge they play again. I'm not demeaning Tiger's skill in any way. He's absolutely on his way to statistically being the best ever. But if he HAD to play every week in order to earn a living, he would have to deal with the possibility of injury or just burnout. Like I said. It's a different game today.|||You can have this discussion so many different ways. You are fore getting Walter Hagen who was also a very good golfer. I am not disagreeing that Slamin Sammy was not very good and you make a lot of very good points.

The only way we would know is to put them all on the same course at age 30. Using the exact same golfing equipment.

I would pay to see that!!|||This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. First of all by calling Sam Snead the greatest golfer ever you are basically proving you don't know anything about the history of golf and what it is all about. Like other major sports the parody in professional golf has created an appearance of a sport that is lacking in competition, this is not true, there are so many talented golfers out there right now that it is even more amazing that Tiger Woods has emerged by such a wide margin as the greatest golfer of this generation. If his career continues at its current pace we will soon be calling him the greatest ever. Don't forget the truest test of sucess in golf and other sports, CHAMPIONSHIPS!!! The championships in golf are obviously the four Major Championships. Tiger-12 Snead-7, in any true follower of golf's opinion Tiger has already surpassed Snead on the list of great champions.|||Determining the greatest golfer is like comparing fruit. The watermelon is huge but is it the best fruit? Look at the burst of flavor coming from a tiny kiwi. Tiger obviously stands head and shoulders above the rest due to the "wow" factor, not unlike Barry Bonds or Sammy Sosa in baseball. All his shots can be duplicated or exceeded by any number of golf professionals on any given day, however, Tiger does produce them more consistently and especially when the tournament is on the line.

My concept of the greatest golfer is a combination of skill, character, personality and background. Using those criteria, several other great golfers rise to the top of my list, including Byron Nelson and Sam Snead.

Tiger is just too "in your face" for me and his demeanor on the course is questionable at times. I personally prefer not to play with a person who doesn't have absolute control of their emotions.
