Did Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd reach 18 under or more when they shot 17 under at Augusta?

When Jack shot 17 under at Augusta in 1965 and Raymond shot 17 under at Augusta in 1976 did they reach 18 under or more before going back to 17 under? Jack also conquered Augusta 1966 but only shot 2 over I think before crusading towards victory in a play - off. Nut very good players normally shot great scores at the US Masters in good conditions, here are the best scores for 72 holes or the best rounds at the US Masters over the years:

Low aggregate record:

1953 - Ben Hogan - 14 under 274

1965 - Jack Nicklaus - 17 under 271

1976 Raymond Floyd - 17 under 271

1980 - Severiano Ballesteros - 13 under 275

1992 - Fred Couples - 13 under 275

1995 - Ben Crenshaw - 14 under 274

1997 - Tiger Woods - 18 under 270

2001 - Tiger Woods - 16 under 272

2010 - Phil Mickelson - 16 under 272

Best rounds:

1940 - Lloyd Mangrum - 8 under par 64

1965 - Jack Nicklaus - 8 under par 64

1986 - Nick Price - 9 under par 63

1996 - Greg Norman - 9 under par 63 and should have beat Nicklaus and Floyd's record of 17 under but bottled it while partnering Faldo for the last two rounds, especially the last round.|||Hi Kevin

Takes a Kevin to answer a Kevin ......

In 1965 Nicklaus never reached 18 under. He birdied the 17th to reach seventeen under, then a par at the last secured his 9 shot victory over Palmer in 2nd place

In 1976 Floyd never reached 18 either, he birdied the 15th to reach 17 under but could not birdie either of the last 3 holes to claim the record outright. He was 8 shots clear of Ben Crenshaw in second place with Nicklaus finishing 3rd.

In 65 Nicklaus won $20K and in 1976 Floyd won $40K for his efforts which is a far cry from the $486K Woods took home for his victory and record breaking 18 under par in 1997.

Interestingly, Woods reached 17 under at the 13th hole during his final round then proceeded to birdie the 14th to beat the record. His final round included 2 bogies and a missed opportunity at the fifteenth to reach -19

All the best
