Beginning Golfer?

My mom gave me a great set of Ben Hogan women's clubs that were sitting in the garage for almost 20 years because she was never going to use them.

I'm really unsure of where to begin with playing though. Should I just go to a driving range and attempt to figure it out on my own? None of my friends really play golf and I don't have the money to afford a private coach.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!|||A lot of junior colleges or community centers offer golf as a recreational course for a very low fee. Almost as good as hiring a coach and a great way to start learning.

Bert|||find a driving range or a golf course in your area and call and see what types of clinics they have for beginers.... that way it's not too expensive, and you get some help from someone who can teach the game...

good luck.|||Get a lessons dvd,or a lessons book, or go to PGAtour.com and download lessons. Then find someone else who has a similar interest and go to a driving range. All golfers start from zero so don't let failure get you down. Also, great place to meet Mr. Right.|||A friend of mine learned how to play when he was 13 by reading Golf Digest and watching instructional videos. By 15 he was on the high school golf team, so it can be done!

If there really is no one you know who can help, then I would say to start with a book or training video and then go to the range and work on one thing at a time. (grass ranges only, no astro turf!!!)

If you've got the guts, watch someone who has a good swing and ask them for help. You would be surprised by how many good golfers like to give tips to beginners.|||i have picked it up as i have went along, i suggest going to a golf course and getting lessons, but if you don't have the money get some books and videos and watch the pros. don't get discouraged if you aren't good at all, it isn't as easy as it looks! You might want some newer clubs as well, because they will be better than some from 20 years ago(lighter, bigger, and the grips will be better). Good luck!|||Go to any golf course. Most have a practice putting green. A great way to start I think. Not only is putting extremely important, it will just get you used to the feel of the club. Then you can progress to the driving range. I'm sure there will be an old golfer around that will be happy to show you some basics. You'll find a lot of older retired men at courses during the day that have nothing better to do.|||Watch as many ladies golf tournaments as you can. Specifically watch how they move when they take the club back and then swing it forward. Watch the feet and how the weight ends up on the left leg and the right foot is on the toe with the sole facing back. practise on the range taking slow backswings, keeping your eyes on the golf ball. Start with the short irons, Sand Wedge, Pitching Wedge and 9 Iron. Don't swing to hard. Good Luck and don't give up.|||wen or if ur in high school ull be able to go out 4 golf and wen u do ask your coach 4 tips and technickes|||Go to the library and look for a golf for beginners book or video. Teach yourself as much as you can in front of the TV (if it's a video) or in the yard, then go to a driving range and hit balls. The Golf Channel also has an excellent show called Golf Channel Academy that has lessons covering different aspects of the game, that are geared towards different levels of players.

There are also a lot of one or 2 day clinics at golf courses. I'm sure if you told your parents you were interested in learning, they'd be happy to set you up in one as a gift or something. They generally are not that expensive.

Good luck and have fun.|||I just started playing in July and I am 57. I took 4 lessons before I played my first game. I took the lessons with a friend which made it cheaper. The instructors advise was to play a few games after the final lesson then come back for a refresher. I play twice weekly with a friends who have played for 10+ years. They provide help when I ask for it.|||Hi! I just started and I did take private lessons from a pro at the club in my town and it was 30$ so i understand what you mean but some clubs offer clinics or lessons. But definitley dont just try to do it on yoour own there are a lot of things to learn and if you do it on your own you might give up. Good luck!
